Jimmy Bui – Devoted Teacher Turned Professional Photographer
Before I got into the world of professional photography, I was an elementary school teacher and worked in public education for 10 years. I taught 6th grade, 5th grade, and 1st grade, and I was incredibly passionate about my job. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, and not once did I ever consider it a job, but rather a calling. During my last year of teaching, I won teacher of the year. This was also the same year where the U.S. economy had it’s biggest recession since the Great Depression, and teacher lay offs was the norm. Despite winning the award, I was laid off. For two years, I struggled to get my job back, but I ultimately decided that a career change would be necessary. I did start my own after school program that focused on video production and science education during that time, but due to lack of funding I had to close it.
So, after I closed the after school program, I had to figure out what my next steps are. I had some of the video equipment from the after school program I started, so I figured it might be cool to do some freelance video work while I figured out what I wanted to do.
